Bathroom Remodel? Some Options to Consider

Newtown Edgmont Friends & Neighbors, January 2024

Looking to remodel or make some changes to your current bathroom? It can be overwhelming to see how many choices and decisions are involved. Choosing new bathroom fixtures is an important decision that can impact both the functionality and aesthetics of your bathroom. Here are some key options to consider when selecting bathroom fixtures:

Sinks and Faucets

  • Consider the style and functionality you’ll be needing in a particular bathroom when choosing a sink. Common types include pedestal sinks, all-mounted sinks, undermount sinks and vessel sinks.
  • Choose a faucet style that complements the overall design of your bathroom. Some options include single-handle, double-handle, wall-mounted and waterfall faucets.

Shower and Tub

  • When it comes to choosing shower heads, there are various types to consider, depending on the overall style you’re going for. Some popular choices include rain shower heads, handheld and/or massaging shower heads and even dual or multiple shower heads. It’s important to consider the water pressure and spray patterns when choosing.
  • Soaker tubs seem to be at the top of most bathroom remodel lists. Freestanding tubs, alcove or recessed tubs, tub/shower combos and corner tubs are popular choices.

Toilets

Options include traditional two-piece toilets and sleek one-piece toilets. Consider whether you want a standard or comfort height toilet. Dual flush toilets offer water-saving options, while pressure-assisted toilets are known for powerful flushes.

Lighting

Vanity Lights: Consider the placement and style of vanity lights to ensure adequate illumination for tasks like shaving or applying makeup.

Ceiling Lights: Additional ceiling lights or a chandelier can enhance overall ambient lighting.

Tile and Flooring

  • Choose a coordinating wall tile for the shower or backsplash. Here the choices can seem endless, but consider the design you’re looking to achieve as well as personal tastes.
  • For the flooring material, options include ceramic tile, porcelain tile, vinyl and natural stone. Important considerations include durability, water resistance and aesthetics.

Mirrors

Consider the shape, size and frame style of your bathroom mirrors. Some vanities come with integrated mirrors.

Accessibility Features

If easier accessibility is something you’re looking to include, consider features like grab bars, ADA-compliant fixtures, a walk-in tub or a curbless shower for improved accessibility.

Water Efficiency

Opt for fixtures with WaterSense certification to save water and reduce utility costs.

When choosing fixtures, it’s essential to maintain a cohesive design throughout the bathroom. Consider your overall design preferences, the size of your bathroom and your budget when making decisions. Additionally, ensure that the fixtures meet local building codes and regulations.
