Before Going to the Range

Newtown Edgmont Friends & Neighbors, September 2023

Before you go to a shooting range, there are several important things to know and consider for your safety and the safety of others. Here are some key points:

Familiarize Yourself with Basic Firearm Safety: It is crucial to have a good understanding of firearm safety rules and principles before going to a shooting range. Learn and follow the four fundamental rules: treat every firearm as if it’s loaded, never point the muzzle at anything you’re not willing to destroy, keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot and be aware of your target and what’s beyond it.

Research and Choose a Suitable Range: Look for a reputable shooting range in your area. Read reviews, check their safety protocols, and ensure they have knowledgeable staff and certified instructors available if you need assistance.

Follow Range Rules and Regulations: Each shooting range has its own set of rules and regulations. Familiarize yourself with them and adhere to them strictly. These rules may include things like wearing eye and ear protection at all times, understanding range commands and following proper range etiquette.

Attend a Firearm Safety Course: If you are new to firearms, consider taking a firearm safety course or seeking professional instruction before going to a shooting range. These courses can provide you with valuable knowledge and hands-on training on safe handling, shooting techniques and range procedures.

Bring Necessary Equipment and Supplies: Typically, shooting ranges require you to bring your own ammunition. Check the range’s guidelines regarding the type of ammunition allowed. Additionally, bring appropriate eye and ear protection, as well as any other equipment or gear required or recommended by the range.

Start with Small Calibers and Progress Gradually: If you’re a beginner or inexperienced shooter, it’s advisable to start with firearms chambered in smaller calibers. These tend to have less recoil and are easier to control. As you gain proficiency and confidence, you can gradually move on to larger calibers.

Follow Range Officer Instructions: Range officers or instructors are there to ensure safety and manage the range. Listen carefully to their instructions and follow them promptly. If you have any questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance.

Remember, safety is paramount at a shooting range. Always prioritize safe handling and responsible firearm usage to ensure a positive and secure shooting experience.
