Rey Azteca Student of the Month: Thomas Smith

Newtown Edgmont Friends & Neighbors, October 2023

The October Rey Azteca Student of the Month is Thomas Smith, who is a Senior at Penncrest High School and received a Certificate of Achievement and a $25 gift card from Rey Azteca, our Sponsor of this program.

Thomas’s journey as a student has been marked by both challenges and accomplishments. Despite facing learning differences, he has managed to overcome these obstacles and achieve significant personal growth. Through hard work, determination and effective support, Thomas managed to bridge the gap between his challenges and academic expectations, finding effective learning strategies that align with his unique way of processing information. By approaching his difficulties as opportunities for growth rather than insurmountable obstacles, Thomas’ mindset significantly contributes to his accomplishments.

Beyond his strides in academics, Thomas is an active member and volunteer with the Edgmont Township Fire Company. He actively participates in responding to fire calls, participates in weekly drill night activities, attends monthly Fire Company meetings and has taken extensive formal training in Fire School.

While attending the Delaware County Intermediate Unit Votech Carpentry Program, Thomas currently works in Commercial and Industrial Concrete Construction for the summer and intends to continue working in the industry while working around school and Fire Company commitments.

Thomas’ long term goals include going into the skilled trades with a focus on being a heavy equipment operator and a future entrepreneur owning his own site excavating company.
