For Eric Koenig, cars have always been more than a way to get from one place to another. They are works of engineering and design, each with its own personality and story.
That passion for automobiles, combined with an appreciation for the art and science of making them look their very best, inspired Eric to turn a personal interest into Koenig’s Detailing, a business that has grown from a mobile operation into a state-of-the-art 2,000-square-foot facility now serving the Newtown Square, Edgmont and surrounding communities.
Koenig’s Detailing began as a passion project in the summer of 2017. At the time, Eric was especially drawn to the growing world of paint correction, an increasingly specialized process that can restore depth, clarity and shine to a vehicle’s finish. “Paint correcting vehicles became my obsession,” Eric explained. At the same time, the automotive detailing industry was rapidly evolving, with new technologies and products changing how professionals protected and preserved a vehicle’s appearance.
Eric was eager to learn and experiment with those new techniques. Paint protection film and ceramic coatings were becoming increasingly popular, and Koenig’s Detailing adopted those services from the beginning. What started as a personal passion quickly became a business, although the early version of Koenig’s Detailing looked very different from the operation customers see today.
“I started Koenig’s Detailing back in 2017, fully mobile and operating out of a 1991 Mercedes station wagon,” Eric said. He brought his equipment and expertise directly to customers throughout the Philadelphia area, using various 1980s and 1990s Mercedes-Benz station wagons as his mobile detailing fleet. It was an unconventional beginning, but it reflected the business’s personality and Eric’s love of cars.
Over the years, that passion and commitment to the craft helped the business grow. Koenig’s Detailing eventually moved into its first facility, then another, and today operates from its third location, a modern facility in Edgmont. The business now employs a small team of detailing and paint correction specialists who share Eric’s enthusiasm for the work.
“We are car enthusiasts at heart,” Eric said. “If we aren’t in the shop, we’re probably out cruising around, getting coffee or at an International Motor Sports Association (IMSA) race.”
That shared enthusiasm is an important part of what sets Koenig’s Detailing apart. While many people think of detailing as simply washing and vacuuming a vehicle, Eric and his team work at a much more specialized level. Their primary services include paint correction, ceramic coatings, paint protection film, window tinting and detailing, with each service designed to improve or preserve the appearance and condition of a vehicle.
Paint correction remains one of Eric’s greatest passions and is at the center of much of the company’s work. The process involves carefully examining a vehicle’s finish and correcting imperfections such as swirl marks, scratches and other defects that can diminish the appearance of the paint. Before beginning, the team uses a paint-depth meter to learn as much as possible about the vehicle and its history. From there, they determine the best approach for achieving the desired results while treating the vehicle with care.
“It’s about understanding what you’re working with before you ever begin,” Eric explained. That attention to detail lets the team customize its approach instead of treating every vehicle the same.
Once the paint has been corrected, many customers choose to protect that finish with a ceramic coating. Koenig’s Detailing uses IGL Coatings to protect the finish, enhance gloss and make vehicles easier to maintain. Paint protection film offers another option for customers looking to protect vulnerable areas from road debris and everyday driving. The company works with STEK and Fusetech films and offers a variety of finishes, including gloss, satin and colored options.
The local community also allows Koenig’s Detailing to provide specialized window tinting services, with both carbon and ceramic film available. The ceramic option provides additional heat and UV protection, while all window tint installations include a lifetime warranty.
Although Koenig’s Detailing is equipped to provide highly specialized automotive services, Eric believes the experience should begin with understanding what each customer actually needs. Not every vehicle requires the same level of correction or protection, and not every customer has the same goals for their car. Whether someone wants to refresh a daily driver, protect a new vehicle or prepare a prized collector car for an event, the team works to find the right solution.
“We can work with your budget to provide your vehicle with maximum care and protection,” Eric said.
That philosophy has helped Koenig’s Detailing build relationships with a wide range of vehicle owners. The company provides everything from standard detailing and mobile maintenance services to concours-level refinement for specialty, vintage and show vehicles. Eric and his team have even worked on vehicles associated with Radnor Hunt and are equipped to provide exceptional care for collector- and museum-quality automobiles.
For those who prefer the convenience of service at home or work, Koenig’s Detailing still offers mobile detailing. While the beloved Mercedes station wagons have been replaced with more practical commercial setups, the customer-focused approach remains the same. The mobile units carry their own water, power and equipment, allowing the team to provide maintenance and detailing services without relying on a customer’s utilities.
Today, having a permanent home in Edgmont represents an exciting new chapter for Eric and his team. The location has allowed Koenig’s Detailing to become part of the local business community while giving area automotive enthusiasts convenient access to the specialized services the company has developed over nearly a decade.
From its beginnings in the back of a 1991 Mercedes station wagon to its current Edgmont facility, Koenig’s Detailing has remained rooted in the same idea that inspired Eric from the start. “We’re still as passionate about the craft as ever,” he said.
For Eric, that passion shows in every vehicle that enters the shop. Whether it is a family vehicle, a new sports car or a cherished collector automobile, the goal is the same: to give every vehicle the care, attention and expertise it deserves. In a community filled with people who appreciate quality and take pride in what they own, Koenig’s Detailing is bringing a distinctive level of automotive care to Newtown Edgmont, one carefully corrected, protected and polished vehicle at a time.
