Let’s Get Creative! It’s National Crafting Month

Newtown Edgmont Friends & Neighbors, March 2026

Spring is on the way! We know it may be hard to imagine, but soon it will be time to open the windows and feel the fresh air rush in. Flowers will bloom, our days will get longer and our moods a little lighter. Spring is the season of new beginnings, and we are all ready for that!

Spring is also when we dust off those winter blues by cleaning our homes. As we welcome the new season on Friday, March 20th, let’s also recognize March as National Crafting Month, which was established in 1994 by the Craft and Hobby Association (now the National Arts Materials Trade Association) to encourage people to explore creative outlets as a way to reduce anxiety and stress. For many, crafting has become a healthy outlet and a relaxing and rewarding hobby, so let’s get creative by making some of our own fun, fresh and new spring home decorations.

Sami Rineer, owner of Board & Brush Studios in Newtown Square, said that National Crafting Month is the perfect time to rethink what it really means to be creative and to explore your own creativity. “Many believe that being crafty requires the ability to paint a perfect landscape or be a true artist, when in reality, that’s far from true,” she said. “While artistic and crafty traits can coincide, creativity is really about slowing down, taking your time and being willing to step out of your comfort zone.” Sami added that during her workshops, she notices that when participants release the pressure to be perfect and focus on the process, creativity becomes something accessible and enjoyable.

How can we celebrate National Crafting Month?
Sami suggests that the best way to grow creativity is by trying something new through a class, like a sewing class, cooking class or painting class. These experiences give you a starting point, gentle guidance and the confidence to explore. “Begin with your strong suit, then push yourself just a little beyond it,” she explained. “Stepping outside what feels familiar is often where creativity truly takes shape, turning curiosity into confidence and
bringing your inspiration to life.”

The beauty of crafting is that it offers endless possibilities for creating and stepping outside your comfort zone. Who knows? It could very well lead to some amazing creations on your part. You never know unless you try!
