When the Newtown Police Department was established in 1954, a uniform was selected to be worn by Newtown Township police officers while on duty. At the time, the department chose to align with Pennsylvania State Police uniforms and selected standard gray and black colors with a matching logo patch. The patch featured the basic Commonwealth of Pennsylvania design along with the words Newtown Twp. Police embroidered inside.
Over the past 70 years, the department’s uniform patch has seen some changes in colors and designs, but one thing has remained the same. It’s the one thing that our officers say they have been asked more times than they can count – “Are you Newtown Township Bucks County or Newtown Township Delaware County?”
Captain John Newell explained that the decision was made to redesign the police logo because many of the Officers felt that it would be a great way to honor the department’s upcoming 70th anniversary. “One of the most visible assets of the township to the community is the police department,” he said. “We are out in the public every day of the year and feel it’s important to be recognized as protecting and serving in Delaware County.” He added that the re-design made sense because our township highway and codes department vehicles and uniform logos clearly indicate Delaware County.
In re-designing the logo/patch, John said they wanted to keep some of the traditional aspects of the logo, such as the gold and black colors, but also
add the identity of the township and recognize the location of the county in which it sits. “We believe we came up with a logo that incorporates the
true history and identity of our unique township,” John remarked. “All of our surrounding townships have re-created their police logos several times
to reflect township changes since the creation of their departments, and we felt it was time to have our logo reflect the pride we have to work for
our township.”
On behalf of your Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors, we would like to thank the entire Newtown Township Police Department in Delaware County for their steadfast dedication to serving and protecting our community. May our officers continue to protect and serve with our utmost respect and appreciation.
