Safely Decorate Your Home’s Exterior This Holiday Season

Newtown Edgmont Friends & Neighbors, December 2023

Holiday decorating can be a fun and festive way to celebrate the season, but it’s important to take some precautions when decorating your home’s roof and siding to ensure safety and prevent damage.

Safety First – ALWAYS!

Use a sturdy ladder and have a spotter when climbing on your roof. Ensure your ladder is placed on stable ground and at the correct angle. Wear appropriate safety gear, including non-slip shoes and gloves. Avoid walking on your roof, especially if it’s steep or covered in snow or ice. Use clips or hooks designed for hanging lights and decorations to avoid damaging your shingles or siding.

Avoid using nails, staples, or screws that can penetrate your roof or siding. Instead, use plastic or adhesive clips. These clips are designed to hold decorations securely without damaging your home’s exterior. Use lightweight decorations to reduce stress on your roof and siding. Heavy decorations can cause structural damage or create weak spots.

If you’re using inflatable decorations, ensure they are well-anchored to prevent wind damage or them blowing away. When hanging decorations on siding, use clips that grip the siding’s edge, rather than fasteners that puncture it. If you decorate the overhangs or eaves of your home, be cautious about placement to avoid blocking attic vents or other crucial components.

Be sure to use only outdoor-rated, weather-resistant lights for exterior decorations. Make sure all electrical connections are protected from the elements. Inspect your holiday decorations for any damage or wear and tear before installing them. Make sure lights and extension cords are in good working condition. Icicle lights that hang from the roof can create a stunning effect, but be sure to ensure they are secure and won’t damage your shingles or gutters. Be mindful of any roof vents or exhaust outlets when placing decorations.

Remove decorations promptly after the holiday season to prevent long-term exposure to the elements, which can cause damage. You can enjoy a beautifully decorated home during the holiday season without compromising your roof and siding’s integrity or safety. If you’re unsure about how to safely decorate your home, consider consulting a professional or a local holiday decorating service for assistance.
