This month we are pleased to introduce you to The Rumford Family: Andrew, Megan, and their four boys, Andrew, Christopher, Daniel and Michael. Life with four little ones can certainly be hectic, but the memories they are making in the community they love make the journey extra fun.
Megan grew up in Drexel Hill with her parents, her sister Lauren and her brother, Steve. She went to St. Dorothy’s School through 8th grade, then Cardinal O’Hara for high school, where she was a cross country and track team member and later coached the track team. Megan continued her studies at West Chester University and earned her degree in Elementary Education. She taught at the Country Day School of the Sacred Heart for a few years before returning to school to become a nurse.
Today, Megan is a postpartum nurse at Chester County Hospital. “While I loved being a teacher and I miss my sweet students, I needed a career that would give me more flexibility for my growing family,” she explained. “I still incorporate teaching in my profession by guiding and supporting new parents with their babies.” Megan feels very fortunate to be able to help new families at the hospital while being present when her own family needs her.
Andrew grew up right here in Edgmont with his parents, his brother Scott and his sister Lindsay. “We lived on Charter Oak in one of the original homes in the Runnymeade Farms development,” he said. “Edgmont has always been a special place to me.” Andrew attended Rose Tree Elementary School, Springton Lake Middle School and graduated from Penncrest High School, where he played soccer and tennis.
After high school, Andrew went to Salisbury University in Maryland to study Finance before joining his father and brother full-time in the family business. “Rumford & Rumford, Inc. is a 4th generation Commercial General Contracting Business based in Media,” he explained. “I really like that I don’t have to go to an office every day and enjoy working with my hands.” Andrew added that his company has been doing a lot of work at Dunwoody Village, and he gets a lot of satisfaction by helping the residents design and construct their homes.
Megan and Andrew met in the summer of 2009 in what is, by far, the most popular vacation spot for young adults from Delaware County – Sea Isle City, NJ. “Andrew and I both rented houses with friends for the summer,” Megan said. “We would run into each other here and there, but it wasn’t until the end of the summer that Andrew asked me on a date.” They immediately hit it off and continued their relationship back at home.
After a few years of dating, Andrew popped the question in January of 2014. “It was on a Saturday night, and I had just finished coaching an O’Hara track meet,” Megan said. “Our bus pulled into the school parking lot, and as I stepped out, I saw that Andrew had placed candles all over the parking lot and had arranged for our family and friends to be there too!” Megan loves to tell their engagement story because she said if you know Andrew, you know he’s a quiet guy, so proposing in such a big way really took her by surprise.
Megan said yes to the dress, and the happy couple married in May 2015 and honeymooned in beautiful St. Lucia. The newlyweds began their married life in downtown Media. “We were living in a house attached to my family’s business,” Andrew explained. “It worked well for us initially, but after a few years, we decided to move to Newtown Square for more space and a yard for our family.” They found a home on a quiet street and settled down, at least for the moment! Megan laughed, saying, “We thought it would be our forever home until we saw that new development was being built on the former Edgmont Country Club property.” She said that Andrew made an appointment to tour the model home, and they were sold. By this point, they had three boys and one on the way, so a development with lots of kids, sidewalks and places to explore checked all their boxes. They moved in October 2021 and started making memories.
Andrew and Megan’s oldest son is seven-year-old Andrew, who attends St. Mary Magdalen. “He’s a great big brother,” Megansaid. “And he’s really getting into sports this year.” Andrew loves to play basketball, soccer, golf and baseball but also enjoys drawing and playing video games. “Recently, he’s been recording every Phillies game and watches the highlights in the morning before going to school,” she laughed.
Five-year-old Christopher is Megan and Andrew’s second boy, who also attends St. Mary Magdalen’s. “Christopher is sweet, caring and very curious about everything,” said Andrew. “When he asks a question, you better be prepared with an answer!” Christopher looks up to his older brother and loves calling his younger brothers the “little guys.”
Daniel is their third son who joined his brothers at school this year and just started playing tee ball for Media’s Little League. “Daniel is a happy, easy-going, yet very independent four-year-old boy who has to do things all by himself,” laughed Megan.
Rounding out the Rumford boys is two-year-old Michael. “Michael is funny,” Megan said. “When his older brothers all left for school on the first day this fall, Michael walked around the house yelling, ‘Hello, where are you?’” Although Michael has adjusted to his alone time, he still misses his brothers and asks Megan every day if it’s time to pick up the boys yet.
Life is busy for the Rumford family! Between managing careers, kids and sports schedules, it leaves little time for hobbies like running for Megan and golf for Andrew. “I have gotten away from running over the last few years, but I’ll get back into it eventually,” Megan explained. “Hopefully, one of the boys will be interested in running, and we can do it together.” Andrew is a member of Rolling Green Golf Club in Springfield and said he does manage to get a round or two in from time to time, but he also enjoys gardening at their home and taking the boys to explore the woods, creeks and ponds in their development.
Fun for the whole family is the priority now, and Andrew, Megan and the boys love to swim in their new community pool. “Our neighborhood is great,” Andrew remarked. “We have met a lot of nice families, and there are lots of kids for our boys to play with.” The amenities in their development also include a basketball and pickleball court, a clubhouse for parties and activities and events like ladies’ nights and pool parties.
Megan and Andrew’s families live close by, too, making family gatherings with cousins a regular occurrence. And it probably goes without saying that summer just isn’t summer without a vacation to Megan and Andrew’s happy place down the shore. “Sea Isle is where it all began, and it’s very sentimental to us,” Megan said. “We love that we can continue making memories there with our boys and make new ones in our new home.”
Andrew and Megan, thank you for sharing your story with our Newtown Edgmont Friends & Neighbors. We wish you all the best in your new home, and perhaps we’ll even see you in Sea Isle!
