Time to Celebrate! Family Fun at NELL and NSPL

Newtown Edgmont Friends & Neighbors, May 2026

Oh, the sweet sounds of spring fill the air! Birds are chirping, kids are playing and bats are cracking over at Newtown Edgmont Little League (NELL) and Newtown Square Petticoat League (NSPL). It’s time to play ball!

For more than 50 years, NSPL has proudly served our community by providing girls with the opportunity to learn, play and grow through the game of softball. What began as a small local program has evolved into a vibrant league of over 450 players each year, representing families from Newtown Square, Broomall, Marple, Edgemont and surrounding areas.

“We are grateful for our players and families, sponsors and volunteers that remain committed to our league,” said NSPL Board Member Jason Natale. “We’ve had an incredible start to our 2026 season.” Jason added that Opening Day was a smashing success with the classic parade to Troop Field, featuring the National Anthem sung by Abby Kubacki, Annabella Pickering, Maggie Trinkle and Rowan Bardo and the ceremonial first pitch thrown
by Township Supervisor Cheryl Grosso.

NSPL has a great lineup of upcoming events including their Night at the Phillies on April 29th and Family Fun Day at Troop Field on May 16th. Stay tuned for more events to be announced soon! Details about these events are on their website NSPLSoftball.com.

Now, let’s head across the street to find out what’s happening at NELL (Newtown Edgmont Little League). Their Opening Day was also held on Saturday, April 11th with special appearances from State Senator Tim Kearney and State Representative Lisa Borowski. NELL’s theme for this season is, For the Love of the Game.

On Saturday, May 30th (rain date Sunday, May 31st), players, families, and friends will gather for NELL Day. It’s a day-long event featuring raffles for cash and prizes, games and activities for all ages, themed gift baskets and a silent auction. “Our NELL Day Committee does an amazing job putting together an event that celebrates the NELL community and creates a fun experience for the kids,” said Mike McCalla, President of NELL.

“Families will be able to watch baseball all day, spend time doing activities they love, and also have the chance to win special prizes throughout the day,” added Mike. The fun kicks off on Friday night, May 29th, with the 12U Home Run Derby, which Mike says draws record crowds! Last year, there were 92 home runs hit! Then on Saturday, May 30th, NELL Day will run from 10am to 8pm. There will be skills competitions throughout the day
for kids at all levels. NELL Day concludes with Championship Night. The championship games will begin at 3pm, and all are welcome to stay and enjoy an evening of exciting baseball. For more information, follow Newtown Edgmont Little League on Facebook and Instagram.
