Just like riding a bike is an expression most of us are familiar with. For many people, getting on a bike even after many years is second nature and should be easy to do. But for some, biking can be overwhelming or intimidating and may not be physically possible. Electric bikes (or e-bikes) open up cycling to a broader range of people, including those with physical limitations or beginners building confidence on two wheels. KlineRentNride, owned by Delco natives Ed and Jessica Kline, is a local company that offers premium electric bike rentals so that any bike ride can be effortless and fun.
Jessica and Ed learned the benefits of e-bikes firsthand on a trip to Snow Canyon in Utah. “Our niece encouraged us to try out the bikes,” recalled Ed. “I was pretty hesitant at first because I hadn’t been on a bike in many years.” But within five minutes, Jessica and Ed discovered what the hype was all about. “When we hopped on the e-bikes, something magical happened— we weren’t just riding, it felt like traveling back in time.”
The Klines’ experience with e-bikes was so exhilarating, they knew it was something worth sharing. They’d fallen in love with e-biking and couldn’t wait to bring that feeling back home in Delaware County. Fueled by a desire to help others rediscover the youthful freedom and thrill of adventure, they launched KlineRentNride this past April.
Jessica and Ed are both Delaware County natives who’ve been married for 32 years. Launching KlineRentNride marked an exciting second career for both of them. Ed grew up in Swarthmore, where he was a police officer for twenty years. He also served as the fire chief of the South Media Fire Company and for the past 14 years he’s been with the Delaware County Emergency Services where he developed and led the Citizen Corps of Delaware County and currently serves as the Deputy Emergency Management Coordinator. Ed said he finds a lot of similarities between his career as a first responder and now running an e-bike company. “I have always been drawn to roles that connect community,” he explained. “Biking is something that can really connect people from all different places and walks of life.”
Jessica, who was born and raised in Ridley Park, had a long career in population healthcare management with Crozer Health until its closure this past April. “When Crozer closed, I was definitely at a crossroads,” Jessica explained. “E-biking really changed my outlook, and I feel blessed that I was able to change that into a business.”
Ed and Jessica searched for the perfect e-bikes and discovered Lectric—an ideal fit for both town cruising and exploring scenic trails. KlineRentNride offers eco-friendly, convenient e-bike rentals and convenient online booking with free delivery to hotels, homes and Airbnbs. Their self-guided tours offer a unique and immersive way to experience the local area at your own pace and their flexible rental options include 4-hour, 8-hour, 3-day and full-week rentals to suit your schedule. They also offer group, veteran and first responder discounts!
Each e-bike is fully charged and comes with a helmet, lock and storage bag, ensuring a reliable and safe ride. Families are welcome, with baby seats, trailers and additional child seating available on XP 4 and Xpedition models. For added safety, all bikes are equipped with lights for visibility and they have bikes for people up to 415 pounds.
Riding an e-bike offers a wide range of benefits, combining the convenience of motorized travel with the physical and mental perks of cycling. “E-bikes make commuting more accessible,” Ed explained. “They allow riders to cover longer distances with less effort, especially over hills or in windy conditions.” “E-bikes are for all sizes, ages and those with knee problems. They are great for everybody,” added Jessica.
Ed said the first thing you’ll notice about e-bikes is that they look a lot like normal bikes. “There is a common myth that electric bicycles are like scooters, but they are actually very similar to regular bicycles, but with an electric motor,” he explained. The only significant difference in appearance is the inclusion of the electrical drive system. This includes a motor, a battery and sometimes a display screen. The battery is what
powers the motor, which offers assistance as you pedal, helping to propel the bicycle forward.
For riders looking for a little bit of adventure, Jessica has a plethora of local trail suggestions on their website, KlineRentNride.com, that she calls Jessica’s Trail Vibe Ratings. “In the Delaware Valley, there are so many trails from peaceful forest paths to ones with majestic water views. Each trail has its own vibe.” Jessica’s suggestions include Chester Creek Trail, which is great for a quick spin or a warm-up ride. If you’re looking for a scenic, mildly academic e-biking experience, Swarthmore College is the place to be. “We’re excited that our new venture offers others a fun and eco-friendly way to explore the Philadelphia region,” Jessica said.
So, whether you’re navigating city streets, rolling through suburban neighborhoods or coasting along scenic trails, every ride is designed to feel like a nostalgic escape.
